Smartwatches are similar to wristwatches but the only things due to which these smartwatches are different from the wrist watches are that these watches can also perform various functions other than telling time to the wearer. These smartwatches having the features of the computing devices due to which it contains many different applications. Most of the smartwatches are featured with Bluetooth device, where Bluetooth device help wearer to use the interface of watches to initiate and answer the phone calls of their mobile phones. These smartwatches also provide various information regarding weather, text messages and email’s etc.

The wearer can also listen to the music through these smartwatches. These smartwatches also helps to dictate the text messages, email and can ask any question. There are various smartwatches which are featured with various functions which help in the collection of the data. These type smartwatches help to collect the data regarding the wearer and also provides the facility of the GPS. These watches are deal with the health of the wearer and also help to direct them during walking and driving. In case of health it gives the information about the heart rate of the wearer.

There are many companies which are manufacturing the smartwatches. Different smartwatches available in the market are Sony smart watch, Samsung Galaxy Gear and Gear Fit, Nike fuel, Pebble watch and Apple watch etc. But sometimes these smartwatches face the criticism because of its large size and looks which do not look to stylish.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF SMARTWATCHES?

In the early years the company name Hamilton Watch Company was launched a digital watch in 1972 named as Pulsar. After that Pulsar turns out to be a brand name but in 1978 it is acquired by Seiko. The year of 1982 a Pulsar NL CO 1 watch was launched and this watch having the capability to store 24 digits and due to this feature this watch became the first ever watch which having the user programmable memory.

In 1980’s Personal computer was introduced in the market and after the launching of these personal computers in the market Seiko began to develop the watches in the form of computer. In 1983, Data 2000 come with a feature of data entry with external keyboard. Data was entered in the watches through electromagnetic coupling.

This model was having the ability to store 2000 character due to which it is named as Data 2000. In 1984 Seiko was launched first ever model with on-board entry and model named as D409 and this model having the ability of storing only 112 digits due to low memory The model of this smartwatches was available in gold, silver and black colour. After Seiko the Casio began to market the computer watches these watches are like calculator watches, Casio data bank and game watches such as Nelsonic game watches, which were produced by Casio and other companies.

In 1984 Seiko released their first model of watch to interface with a computer and model named as RC-1000. This model was developed by Seiko Epson. This model was compatible with most of the popular PCs at that time which includes Apple II, II+ and IIe, the Commodore 64, IBM PC, NEC 8201, Tandy Colour Computer, Model 1000, 1200, 2000 and TRS-80 Model I, III, 4 and 4p. In 1985 Seiko and Epson released a wrist computer watch with joint brand name “Seiko Epson”.

In 1994 Timex Datalink was launched a smartwatch which having the wireless data transfer mode which helps to communicate with PC. Microsoft Schedule+ help in creating contacts and appointments.

In 1998

Steve Mann the man who is known as the “father of wearable computing” who invented and the designed the world’s first ever Linux wrist watch. It was not successful because of joystick which is used for input character instead of touch screen. This wrist watch was having a small screen with resolution of 102*64. This watch was presented in the market on 7 February 2000 and considered to be first smart watch due to its graphics display and other applications.

SPH-WP10 was the world’s first watch phone which is launched by the Samsung in 1999. It had monochrome LCD screen, integrated speaker and microphone and 90 minutes of talk time.

In 2000

In June 2000 for the wrist watches which run Linux was displayed a prototype by the IBM. Starting these watches having only 6 hours battery and then after some it was extended to 12 hours. It was feature with the 8 MB memory and had Linux 2.2. After that various changes made in these watches, IBM done collaboration with Citizen Watch Co. to modify these watches into “Watch Pad”.

 

In 2003

In 2003 the Wrist PDA was launched by the Fossil and this watch ran the Palm OS. This watch featured with 8 MB of RAM and 4 MB of Flash Memory. This watch was declared to be a revolutionary watch by the reviewer but face criticism because of its heavy weight.

In 2004 Microsoft released a smartwatch named as SPOT where SPOT means “Smart Personal Objects Technology”. This watch provides information about weather.

In 2006 Fossils teamed up with the Sony Ericsson and releases the first Bluetooth connected watch named as MBW-100. It provides user notification to the user when received calls and text messages. It only connects with Sony Ericsson cell phones.

           

In 2009

CEO of Smartwatch and Burg Wearables launched first Standalone smartphone watch having its own sim card named as Burg. They receive award for the innovation of this product. Samsung also launched the S9110 watch phone.

In 2011

On Nov 6, 2011 Motorola launched MOTOACTV. The smartwatch named as VESAG launched by Vyzin electronics which is the first smartwatch for health.

In 2012 Pebble launches a innovative smart watch is resistant to water and can communicate with both Android and iOS device by Bluetooth 2.1 and 4.0. This smart watch earns more money in April, 2012 to May, 2012 ($10.3 Million).

In 2013

Omate launched a smartwatch with features of smartphone named as True Smart. This year known to be “the year of smartwatch” many company was start their work on smartwatch device like Acer, Apple, BlackBerry, Foxconn/Hon Hai, Google, LG, Microsoft, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sony, VESAG and Toshiba.
